About us

The Potteries Outdoor Group (or POG) is a friendly, informal group of people who enjoy being outdoors enjoying the countryside. Our members are drawn from all around North Staffordshire and East Cheshire and are a range of ages, both couples and singles.

Walking is at the core of what we do, and we are lucky to have some of England’s most beautiful scenery within easy reach (not that we’re biased, of course!). With the Potteries as our base, we have the Staffordshire moors and Cheshire hills to the north, Cannock Chase to the south, Shropshire to the west and the Peak District to the east and north-east. In the summer we have a series of short evening walks, often with option of a pub meal afterwards. We also have day walks from fairly easy “lowland” rambles to more challenging mountain walks.

To go further afield, we make weekend trips to Youth Hostels around the country, which allow us to visit places that would be out of reach for a day trip.

As well as walking we have a number of members who enjoy a cycle ride, and other outdoor activities over the years have included orienteering, canoeing and even gliding!

Naturally as the evenings draw in we spend more time indoors.  These events include trips to the theatre or cinema, meals out, or sometimes just a social drink at a local pub.

We welcome new members of all ages and abilities – all we ask is that you know your own limits as some walks can be strenuous, though most are suitable for anyone in good health and reasonable fitness (if in doubt, please talk to the organiser).

Almost all of our activities are arranged by members, for members.  (Occasionally we may attend an event run by another organisation.)  So everyone is encouraged to lead activities now and again or suggest activities the group might enjoy, though this is by no means a requirement.
